Chapter Nineteen

Saturday found Kaine waiting again for Harper to come home from her day off, but this time, she was late. It was almost 7:30 p.m., and he had requested that she be home early. They had another event that night. This one was closer to home, but the meal had already been served, so there was no need to go anymore.

It wasn’t that the event was even important. It was just that he had asked her to come home early, and she hadn’t. She hadn’t known it was important to him.

It was just after five that he realized he didn’t know her cell phone number. He’d never needed to contact her. Until today, she had been on time or early every day.

Pacing the living room, he checked out the window to see if her Jeep was there yet. As he looked out, a red Jeep drove into the driveway, and Harper got out of the passenger seat. She waved at the driver, and the Jeep backed out again, leaving her to walk into the house alone. Today she was carrying a bag that he assumed held a dress and her backpack.

Her blonde hair was once again upswept from her face and was held in place by a clip, but some tendrils had escaped and were floating down her back and side. Her usual smile was missing, and she was biting her lip as she closed the door behind her.

Meeting her at the door, he saw she had black streaks all over her clothes and face. Her fingers were delicately holding the top of a metal hanger. Whatever was in it was hidden behind her back.

“Where were you?” he demanded as she hung the hanger on a doorknob, leaving most of the bag in a heap on the floor.

“I-94, trying to fix the Jeep. Mom thinks the alternator went out. I need to wash my hands.” She held them up, and they were greasy black, as was her once light blue “HOsh” shirt and jeans.

“You could have called.” He folded his arms over the tux shirt he still wore.

“I would have if I had your number, and your receptionist doesn’t give that out. I got Agatha to pick me up and bring me here. What time do we have to be there?”

“Six.” He wasn’t taking her excuse as real.

“Sorry. I left there at four and then spent over an hour trying to fix the car. I usually can. Then I had to walk to get a signal for a ride. Agatha and Violet brought me here. Everyone was scattered this evening. Date night.” She shrugged.

“Three hours along the side of the road, and nobody picked you up?”

“I do not get into cars with strangers, Kaine. Really, you would rather me be dead than late?”

“No, I would rather you drive a reliable vehicle that doesn’t break down.” He knew it was unfair of him to argue about her choice of vehicle, but their Jeeps must break down all the time.

“Are you paying for it? Because I have no money.
